WEST FRANKFORT - A. L. Lukens, Al to friends, Leon and Papa to family, 84, passed away Monday, May 25, 2010.

Al was born in Herrin on Oct. 14, 1925, to Noel and Golda Lukens.

Al left Herrin High School in 1944 to join the U.S. Air Force to serve his country in 1944. He retuned to join the family business, Bonifield Bros. Truck Line where he ended his career there as vice president/general manager. He then began a new career in sales with Hulbert Oil retiring as sales manager. He continued working there after retirement consulting to the mines until he was 78 years old.

Al loved living in West Frankfort. He moved there in 1950 and quickly became involved giving back to the community through the JCs and as a volunteer fireman, where he made lifelong friends. He served both as president of the JCs and as state vice president. He served as president of the West Frankfort Park Board and was instrumental in obtaining a grant to pave the roads through the park. Our family will sit at the shelter in the park named in his honor and share stories this weekend.

At the age of 45, Al became a student of golf and loved playing the game until he was around 80. He was president of Franklin County Country Club for five years. As a hobby, he built golf clubs for others, including his grandsons, and for Christmas this year he proudly made a set for his 18-month-old great-grandson, Colton. The tradition continues. For 30 years he had a standing golf game on Thursday after-noon in the same foursome.

Al lived on Candy Cane Lane and was a founder of their annual Christmas tradition. He, along with the neighbors, brought joy to thou-sands for the past 25 years. He covered his roof and yard with lights and his favorite display was "It's a Small World After All."

Everything he did, he did with a passion. In recent years, Al became re-involved in the community as an advocate for bringing Home Rule to West Frankfort, and by obtaining funds from the state to beautify the interstate exchange with flowers. He also served as chairman of the Long Range Planning Committee. He loved this community.

Al's many recent interests included traveling to see his kids and grandkids, watching his investments, learning the computer and taking pride in his beautiful green yard. He spent the last week of his life in Santa Fe, N.M. with his grandson, Ben.

Al is survived by his loving family, his wife, Dorothy; daughter, Sally (Tim) Barber of Austin, Texas; son, Allen (Luke) Lukens of Dacula, Ga.; his sisters and their husbands, Jan Charlie Blaylock and Kay and Joe Howell. The lights of his life were his grandchildren, Brett, Ben and Adam Barber, all Texans, and Leah and Lindsay Lukens, who live in Georgia. Photos of his grandson Colton Christian Barber brought a loving smile to his face and the latest was proudly displayed on his huge computer screen at all times.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his mother-in-law, Billie Hestand.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 29, 2010, in Parker Reedy Funeral Home in West Frankfort, with the Rev. Charles Blaylock officiating, and military rites by the Military Honors Team of Marion. Burial will be in East Lawn Memorial Gardens in Energy. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of West Frankfort or Frankfort Area Historical Museum and will be ac-cepted at the funeral home.
