Son of Frank Gilman Wright and Grace Torbert Wright, Gil was born May 29, 1920 in Burlington, Iowa. He graduated from Mediapolis HS and Burlington Junior College. In 1942 Gil enlisted in the Army Air Corp and served in England as a radar repairman. He and Irene Hutchcroft married on July 9, 1945 in Mediapolis, and he studied electrical engineering at Iowa State University. In 1947, he returned to Mediapolis and opened Gil’s Home Aid Shop, selling some of the earliest TVs in the area, along with numerous appliances and radios. Gil repaired all of the above, frequently making house calls to do so.
In the early 60's, Gil closed his shop to work in sales for the Rural Electric Cooperative in Wapello. Honesty and reliability were among his hallmarks. He was an enthusiastic supporter of Youth for Christ and a devoted lifelong member of Mediapolis Presbyterian Church where he served in many different capacities over the years. After Irene died in 2004, Gil lived with his sister Aletha Spreacker (Albuquerque, NM) for seven years. In 2012 he moved to Calvin Community in Des Moines and he attended First Federated Church during that time.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Irene, infant son Wendell, and his sisters Ethel Eland and Aletha Spreacker.
