Louis C. Backus died at the home of his daughter in this city Tuesday morning at four o'clock, aged 76 years, 8 months and 6 days, after an illness of several weeks.
Mr. Backus was born in Michigan March 29, 1835; and when a young man moved with his parents to Peru Illinois; where he met and married Sarah Jane Mitchell.
To this union was born three daughters, all of whom survive their father. Seven years after their marriage Mrs. Backus died, leaving the father and three, small children. Two years later he was married to Mrs, Woodruff of Mineral, III.
For a number of years, he was employed by the Rock Island railroad as engineer and fifty years ago he entered the Dow, Gilman & Hancock in the milling business, working steady for this firm until five years ago when old age compelled him to quit steady work. The firm, to show their appreciation of his services, have kept him on a pension ever since.
The three children who survive him are Mrs. A R. Pierson, of Randolph, Neb., Mrs. E. A. Jacobs, of Cashmere, Wash., and Mrs. Minnie Pierson, of Lafayette, Ill. The first mentioned and the last being present at his death.
A short service was conducted at the A R. Pierson home Thursday morning and the remains shipped to Pierce for burial in the cemetery there besides those of his wife who died May, 10, 1910. A short service was held at the grave side in Pierce Thursday afternoon at three o'clock.
