John Harlen Hedrick, 88, of Becks Nursery Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, at his home after an illness of one month.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Memorial United Church of Christ, where he was a charter member, by the Rev. Don Leonard. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military graveside rites by VFW Post 3074.

Mr. Hedrick was born Aug. 28, 1914, in Davidson County to John Franklin Hedrick and Ida Mae Beck Hedrick. He was co-owner of Hedrick Well Drillers and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a member of the VFW Post 3074, American Legion Post 8 and Amvets Post 13.

Surviving are his wife, Avery Cooper Hedrick of the home; one son, Grady Hedrick and his wife, Luanne, of Lexington; two daughters, Kathy Coggins and her husband, Kelton, and Sandra Johnson and her husband, Goble, all of Lexington; seven grandchildren, Ethan Hedrick, Emily Hedrick, Shea Johnson and Shawn Johnson, all of Lexington, Sheree Lanier of Hampton, Va., and Kelly Coggins and Kimberly Jones, both of Denton; four great-grandchildren, Alisha Jones and Luke Jones, both of Denton, Harleigh Johnson of Lexington and Christian Lanier of Hampton, Va.; one brother, Clifford Hedrick of Lexington; and two sisters, Blanche Essick of Asheboro and Marie Seaford of Lexington.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Davidson Funeral Home and other times at the home of his son.
