Sonja was born in Clinton, Missouri on November 27, 1941 to John "Jack" and Edythe (Smith) Fortney. She attended a Clinton elementary school and Clinton High School, graduating in 1958. Her only sibling was an older brother, Ronald "Ronnie" Fortney (deceased).
She first married a CHS classmate, Fredrick "Fred" Duensing, who died tragically in an auto accident in 1967. She later married Robert Gessley (deceased in 2015) and they had a daughter, Jennifer (Gessley) Gayman.
Sonja Lived most of her life in the Lee's Summit, Missouri area serving as a librarian in the Lee's Summit School District for 30 years. She was also a past president of the Lee's Summit Chapter of the National Education Association.
