Joan Bailey Hambly
Joan died peacefully in her own home on December 17, 2007. She was born July 10th, 1924 in Oakland, Calif., to Elmer Ellsworth and Eleanor Lowell Bailey. Joan was raised in Pasadena Calif., then attended U.C. Berkeley where she met her future husband, Alvin Sargent Hambly Jr., M.D. She graduated and received her nursing degree from U.C. San Francisco.
She and Alvin raised their five children in Berkeley, Calif., where she was very involved with girl scouting, her church and community. Joan was very socially-minded, and walked with Caesar Chavez to win rights for migrant workers.
In 1972, Joan and Alvin moved to Healdsburg, Calif., where Joan lived for another 20 years. She was very active at St. Paul's Episcopal Church and was a founder of the Home Hospice of Sonoma county. In the early 1990s, she moved and made her home in Ashland, Ore.
Joan was an artist and excelled at quilting, knitting and sewing. She loved her garden and loved to cook and entertain. She was passionate about the opera and music from all over the world. She loved her community at Trinity Episcopal Church. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends and community.
She is survived by her sister, Nancy Hodgman of Riverside, Conn.;
her five children, Katherine Crow of Sacramento, Calif., Barbara Tennant of Ashland, Ore., Stephen Hambly of Oregon City, Ore., Margaret Watson of Richmond, Va. and Peter Hambly of Ashland, Ore.;
eight grandchildren, Matthew Crow, Barbara Crow, Susan Crow, Joseph Tennant, Rosemary Tennant, Rebecca Requejo, Stephen Ozias Hambly and Rene Hambly;
and three great-granddaughters, Jeilene Hambly, Haley Hambly and Amelie Requejo.
Memorial services will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, Ashland, Ore., at 10:00 a.m., on Thursday, December 17, 2007.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Marcia Van Dyke Music Fund, Trinity Episcopal Church, 44 North 2nd St., Ashland, OR. 97520.
