William E. Copeland graduated in 1860 from Harvard University, served in the Civil War (Co. F, 44th Mass Inf.), and moved to Burley at 62 years old. He became editor of the Co-operator (Brotherhood Newsletter) and president of the Burley colony. He died in March of 1904 and buried in Burley Cemetery after the "procession wound its way up the hill to our beautiful cemetery, where a few final words were spoken and the remains tenderly consigned to their last resting place under 'the murmuring pines and the hemlocks' which Brother Copeland loved so much". This information came from Charles LeWarne's book on 'Utopians on Puget Sound 1885-1915'
