Born January 16, 1926 in Mercer County, Illinois, Nellie was the daughter of John and Nellie Ryan Petrie. She married Joe P. Carlson on August 3, 1945 in Pyote, Texas. He preceded her in death on April 29, 1985. She married Don Pruett on April 21, 1989 in Quincy. He preceded her in death on March 8, 2014.
Nellie was a member of Faith Presbyterian Church and a life member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She loved helping others as a volunteer at Blessing Hospital. Nellie was an avid Quincy Blue Devil basketball fan, enjoyed traveling, attending the Quincy Community Theater and Quincy Symphony concerts, buying and refinishing antiques, going out to eat and spending time with her friends and family. Nellie will be remembered by her family as a wonderful homemaker.
A graduate of New Windsor High School, Nellie continued her studies and obtained her cosmetology license. She was first employed at Minneapolis-Moline Company in the financial department until she moved to Quincy. In Quincy, Nellie worked at Stepps Beauty Salon and then as a receptionist for Dr. Leonard Grayson at the P & S Clinic for 16 years until her retirement in 1989.
Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Nettles of Overland Park, KS; three grandchildren, Linda Parker (David) of Cabot, AR, Jackie Reider of Overland Park, KS and Michael Nettles (Sachiko) of Des Moines, IA; four great grandchildren, Brett Parker, Jessica Parker, Regan Reider and Abigail Reider; two step children, Judy Baldwin (Rick) of Mesa, AZ and Larry Culp (Susan) of Decatur, IL; and several step grandchildren, step great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Nellie was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Joe Carlson and Don Pruett; a son in infancy, Scott Carlson; and two brothers, Joe Petrie and Francis Petrie.
Graveside services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:00 in the New Windsor Cemetery, New Windsor, Illinois.
Visitation will be Friday evening from 4:00 to 6:00 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home in Quincy.
Memorials may be made to the Shriner's Childrens Hospital.
