Ambrose was the son of Brice Hamilton & Sarah Hay Edwards. He married 28 May 1902 to Polly Jane Counts and they were the parents of seven children.

"Virginia Mountaineer", Grundy, VA Thur 30 Jun 1960 - Rites Set Today For Ambrose W. Edwards Funeral services were scheduled for 11 a.m. this morning, (Thursday) for Ambrose Wilson Edwards, 77, who died at the home of a son, Linden Edwards, at Birchleaf, with whom he had been making his home. Services were set for the Sandlick Baptist Church, with Rev. Landon Colley, Rev. Stewart Owens and Rev. Henry Owens officiating. Burial is to be in the Edwards Cemetery, Grundy Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. He is survived by five other sons, Ora and Arvie Edwards of Birchleaf, Teddy Edwards of Detroit, Mich., Earl Edwards of Clintwood, and Carlos Edwards of Abingdon; two daughters, Mrs. Velva Hay of Abingdon, and Mrs. Mollie Arrington of Grundy; two brothers, Patton Edwards of Counts, and Stacy Edwards of Detroit; four sisters, Mrs. Phoebe Counts of Birchleaf, Mrs. Polly Clevinger and Mrs. Criffie (Crissie, prob. typo) Clevinger of Pikeville, KY, and Mrs. Gracie Deel of Hampton.
