Marlene Andrews, 82, of Kearney died Friday, March 2, 2018 at the Ravenna Good Samaritan Home. Funeral Services will be 10:30 am Thursday at the O’Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral Home in Kearney with Pastor Dean Pofahl officiating. Interment will follow at Shelton Cemetery.
Services are entrusted to O’Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral and Cremation Services.

Marlene was born September 28, 1935 in Shelton, Nebraska to C. Marvin and C. Laurene (Mayfield) Helser. She attended elementary school south of Shelton. The Helser family moved into Shelton in 1949. Marlene was a 1953 graduate of Shelton High School. During her senior years she served as pep club president and played snare drum in the band. She attended Kearney State College for one year and then taught in a rural school district a year later. In 1956, she started dating Loyd Andrews and they became engaged September 25, 1956 and then married February 3, 1957. The couple moved to Sterling, Colorado where Loyd was employed by Gamble Stores and Marlene was a social worker for the Logan County Welfare department for 10 years. While in Sterling, Marlene served as treasurer and president of the Sterling Colorado Jayceettes. They moved to Kearney in 1970 to complete their degrees. Marlene was employed by Baldwin Filters and earned her Bachelor’s degree in 1975. Marlene taught for two years at Alfalfa Center as head teacher. She then worked at Kearney Public School as a substitute teacher of over 25 years. Marlene was a past president of the Kearney Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband Loyd Andrews of Kearney; sister Marcella Helser of Cheyenne, WY; cousins Donald Mayfield of Shelton, Jodi (Kent) Fletcher of Shelton, Dick (Wilma Jean) Mayfield of Shelton, Riley Mayfield of Shelton, Randy Mayfield of Grand Island, Sara Rolfmeyer of Shelton, Bobbi Garvey of Dalton, NE, Earl (Rose) Burkey of Omaha, Kevin Mayfield of Wood River and Alan Mayfield of Gibbon.

Marlene was preceded in death by her parents; mother-in-law and father-in-law Irvin and Marjorie Craig; grandparents Cleo and Nellie Mayfield.
