Christopher S. Gallaher, age 77, of Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, February 25, 2018, at St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead.

Born June 10, 1940, in Ashland, Kentucky, Chris was the son of A. Frank and Bethel Christian Gallaher.

Chris is survived by his wife, Linda Swearingen Gallaher, whom he married on January 28, 1962; a son, Brent Christopher and wife Vanessa of Cincinnati, Ohio; a daughter, Shannon Erin and husband David Schmidt of Dublin, Ohio, and their two sons, Aiden David and Gabriel William; a brother, Jack and wife Pat of Ashland, Kentucky; and a sister, Beverly Summers of Valley Village, California.

Chris earned an AB in music education/composition in 1962 at Morehead State University; a Masters in Music (theory and trumpet) at Indiana University in 1965; and a Ph.D. in music theory/composition/trumpet in 1975 from Indiana University.

His teaching career began as a band director at Raceland High School, Raceland, Kentucky, in 1962. From 1966-1970, Chris taught at Frostburg State University, Frostburg, Maryland. In 1972, he returned to MSU and taught until retirement in 2003. Christopher served as the chair of the Department of Music and was recognized as a recipient of the University’s most prized faculty awards in being awarded the 1996-97 “Distinguished Creative Productions Award.” Chris was an extensively published composer/arranger of nearly 50 compositions and arrangements.

And he traveled the U.S. performing with artists such as Andy Williams, Glen Campbell, Elvis Presley, Johnny Mathis, Henry Mancini, Sonny and Cher and Pat Boone.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, March 1, 2018, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, 400 Fraley Drive, Morehead, KY 40351.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the A. Frank and Bethel C. Gallaher Memorial Music Performance Competition at Morehead State University, MSU Foundation, 150 University Blvd., Box 1887, Morehead, KY 40351
