Services for Etta S. Roberts, 92 of rural Mankato, who died Monday, August 20, 1984 at the home of her daughter Ann Meyer, will be 2 p.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church, the Rev. J. Lelend Simcox officiating. Burial will be in Minneopa Cemetery.
Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Johnson-Boman Mortuary, and one hour before services. Mrs. Roberts was born August 9, 1892 at Harrold, South Dakota. She graduated from nurse's training at Abbott Hospital in Minneapolis. She married Arthur Roberts September 1,1917 and they were married 64 years. She was a member of the Gold Star Mothers and the American Red Cross. Over the years; she was a member of Zion Church in rutal Mankato and most recently First Presbyterian.
She is survived by two daughters, Ruth L. (Mrs. Charles) Otto of rural Mankato and Ann L. (Mrs. Burton) Meyer of Mankato; one sister, Muriel Strickland of Long Beach, California; 8 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur, in 1981, and by one son, Sgt. John Dean Roberts, U.S.M.C., at Iwo Jima in 1945.
Notes from Shirley Hemingway: Etta's parents were Charles L. Eakin (1865-1920) and Etta Jane Sheldon(1863-1892) Etta's mom (who was also named Etta) died on August 17,1892,eight days after Baby Etta's birth. Etta said her mother's condition was not critical until a few days before her death. Evidently she had heart difficulty which she was subject to, but she actually died from an infection. Little Baby Etta weighed only 2 lbs. 1/2 oz and Grandpa Sheldon came right away after she was born and stayed with her and fed her with a medicine dropper. He'd take a spoon and put some whiskey in it and burn off the whiskey and feed her with that and rice water. Etta said that saved her life. Baby Etta stayed with her Grandpa and Grandma Sheldon for about 4 months, but the Eakin Grandparents wanted her so they came and got her and brought her to Pierre, SD. Etta stayed in South Dakota til she graduated and went into nurses training in the cities in 1912.
I had the opportunity to meet and visit with Etta at her daughter Ruth's house. Etta was in her 90's but just was a most delightful and interesting person to visit with! She had lots of interesting comments & stories about the Sheldon family. (Her Grandma Caroline Sheldon was a Hemingway...sister of Calvin Hemingway who was my husband's great, great grandfather.)
