Margaret was educated at Presentation Convent in Dungarvan, County Waterford, Ireland. She then taught for a few years at convent schools in Hull and Manchester, England. In 1883, at age 21, she arrived in Queensland. In 1886 she married John Murphy in St. Stephan's Cathedral in Brisbane. They raised their family of 5 children in Townsville, Queensland. She died March 15, 1909, at age 47.
