Lewis Carter Burwell, III
August 12, 1943 - February 24,
U.S. Veteran

Col. Lewis Carter Burwell III, USAF (ret.), beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully at Covenant Care Sacred Heart in Pensacola, FL, on February 24, 2018.

He was born to Lewis and Edith Burwell on August 12, 1943, and grew up in Pinehurst, NC. Early on, he began his career of service as a proudly decorated Eagle Scout with gold and silver palms. After graduating from Tabor Academy in Massachusetts, he went on to receive his Bachelor's Degree in Business and Russian Language from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1966. In 1982, he attained a Master's Degree in Soviet Studies from the Defense Intelligence College of Washington D.C. He then graduated with highest honors from Georgetown University, obtaining a second Masters in International Relations/National Security Studies in 1983. In 1988, he received his Executive MBA from Southern Methodist University's Cox School of Business in Dallas, TX.

The long and faithful military service of Colonel Burwell began in May 1967. His assignments, awards and achievements are seemingly endless, but his most honorable military decorations include the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Defense Superior Service Medal, Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with the OLC and both Army and Air Force Commendation Medals. Colonel Burwell was selected for promotion to Reserve Brigadier General in 1995 and later retired in 1998.

As a civilian, in 1972 he founded Pinehurst Airlines which became one of the foundation airlines for the current Airborne Express Cargo airline. He sold the company and in 1984 joined Metro Airlines of Houston as Vice President and Special Assistant to the President. Shortly thereafter, he moved to Dallas, and as Executive VP and Chief Operating Officer he founded the American Eagles Airlines, which became the first dedicated regional airline for American Airlines. He later became VP of Marketing for AAR Corp, Chicago, IL, a worldwide company supporting major airlines in aircraft maintenance, modification, inventory support and other services. In 1991, he moved to Little Rock, AR, as Executive VP and COO of Arkansas Mod Center, which was later AR Aerospace, a subsidiary of British Aerospace, PLC. Until his retirement in 1988 he provided a variety of consulting services in Strategic Planning, Post-Merger/Acquisition Integration Programs, Operational Service Evaluations for a multitude of airline corporations and banking and leasing companies.

Amidst his accomplishments there was a lighter side to Carter's life- his most precious dogs, his Carolina Tarheels, his 1972 Porsche, his Harley rides, his treasured friends, and his Saturday night steaks and martini with two olives.

Colonel Burwell was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Edith Burwell and his sisters, Margaret Barnhardt and Lynne Abraham.

He is survived by Judy, his loving wife of 50 years; his daughter and son-in-law, Brennan and Nick Blanchard; his son, Lewis Carter Burwell IV "Bo" and his companion Janelle Bricker; and his brothers and sister-in-law, Henry Burwell and Robert and Ellaine Burwell.

Visitation will be held 10:45am until the Funeral Service at 11:45am Friday, March 2, 2018 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel, with Chaplain Ken Griffin officiating. Burial will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery, with full Air Force honors.
