The son of John Elexander Chaffin & Arabell (Collins) Chaffin
Sam's parents died when he was at an early age. he was living with his Uncle Wiley & Aunt Mattie Collins until his uncle passed away and he was sent to The Buckner Orphanage, as was his siblings, Ora, Nora, Lillie, & Frank.
In 1940 census records states Sam Chaffin, 50, single, living in the household of aunt & uncle Chris & Lorena Chaffin as a unpaid worker. After 1940 no record of his death has been found.

Wiley "Pamp" Collins, his wife Mattie Brown and their daughter Lucretia Collins on his lap. Mattie had not had her 2nd daughter, Lillie Beryl Collins, who was born in Oct 1897. The other children were being raised by The Collins' and are (from left to right) Ora, Nora, Lillie, Sam and Frank Chaffin. Prior Wiley's death about 1900-1901, the children were sent to a local orphanage.
