Harry Axemaker, age 76, of Mitchell, SD died unexpectedly Monday, January 29, 2018 at Avera Queen of Peace ER. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Friday, February 2, 2018 at Holy Family Catholic Church with burial and military rites at Servicemen’s Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Thursday, February 1, 2018 at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 PM.
Harold Charles Axemaker, son of Charles and Marcella (Reuland) Axemaker, was born November 30, 1941 on their farm in rural White Lake, SD. He attended school in White Lake until the third grade, when he moved with his family to Mitchell in 1952. While in Mitchell, Harry attended and graduated from Notre Dame. He attended one semester at Dakota Wesleyan University before being drafted into the US Army. Harry served in the South Dakota National Guard for six years.
Harry was united in marriage with Mary Blindert on August 3, 1991 in Mitchell, SD.
Harry worked in sale for his entire adult life. He worked to Tri State Tobacco and Candy for 30+ years, working as a stock boy and working his way up to a salesman. He continued working as a salesman even after Tri State was bought out by Amcon Tobacco and Candy. He continued working as a salesman part time for Yankton Wholesale up to the time of his death.
Harry’s main passion was drag racing and was a lifetime member of NHRA. During his racing career, he won two national titles. One in Brainerd, MN and the other in Indianapolis, IN. He also enjoyed bowling, softball and racquetball.
His hobbies include woodworking projects for his wife, mowing and helping with yardwork. He was known to his family as the “South Dakota Griswold” because he loved decorating outdoors for Christmas. He spent much of his time attending his grandkids sporting and other various activities. Harry enjoyed carpooling kids after school. Harry had a soft spot in his heart for animals. He had numerous pets and always seemed to be adopting stray pets. He was a loving and devoted husband, stepfather and grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his uncle, Ray Reuland; his aunt, Ruth Reuland; and a cousin, Lawrence Axemaker.
