Her mother had been committed to the Virginia Colony for the Epileptic and feeble minded. Carrie was in the care of foster parents and had a child, but was unmarried. The state claimed that Carrie was unfit to reproduce because she was promiscuous and feeble minded, a trait she shared with her mother. 65,000 Americans were sterilized without their own consent or that of a family member. Carrie died in a Waynesboro, Virginia nursing home of natural causes. She is loved and dearly missed.
