John Brown was born in Long Island, New York on 25 Jun 1746. He moved to New Jersey with his family and served in the New Jersey Militia during the Revolutionary War.

John Brown was a blacksmith by trade. He married Mary Magdalene Brugler and they had the following children:

James Brown (1773-1820), married Elizabeth.

Samuel Brown (1778-1823), married Dorothy Nice.

Elizabeth Brown (1782-1850), married George Hess.

Mary Brown (1782-1862), married Joseph Otto.

Sarah Brown (1787-1869), married Henry Bowman.

After his wife Mary's death in 1793, John Brown married Margaret, widow of Henry Haines. Their marriage took place on 21 Oct 1794. The couple moved to Columbia County, Pennsylvania in the mid-1790s where they purchased a large amount of land, and operated a grist mill and saw mill. John was a Justice of the Peace for Columbia County and he and his family were active in the Methodist church, which for some time met in their home.

My flesh shall rest within the ground
Till the last trumpet's joyful sound
Then burst its chains with sweet surprise
And in my Saviour's image rise.
