Forest Eugene “Lefty” Dill, 82, of Norfolk, Va., passed away March 18, 2016.

Lefty, as he was best known, was born in East Liberty, Ohio on Oct. 30, 1933, to the late Roy and Ida Evans Dill.

He joined the U.S. Navy in 1955 and retired in 1971. Although Lefty’s rate in the U.S. Navy was that of ship’s serviceman, he spent his career serving as a pitcher for the Navy, Coast Guard and for the Air Force fastpitch softball teams. He closed out his career in the early ’70s with district titles in Maryland and Ohio. In 2003, Lefty was inducted into the ASA Tidewater Softball Hall of Fame for his outstanding pitching skills.

Though softball played a pivotal role in Lefty’s life, his first love was his family. Lefty married Peggy Irene Bartee in 1957 and they remained so for 59 years. Lefty is survived by Peggy, along with four of their five children, Angel and Dale Lester, Bobby and Cheryl Dill, John and Ginny Dill, and Robert and Susie Stuart; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and his sister, Nancy Hague. Lefty was preceded in death by son, Timothy Dill.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Woodlawn’s American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life Team.
