obit: The pale horse and his rider stopped at the home of Mr. and Mrs. James M. Pence, of Leatherwood, near Smithland, Saturday, June 21, and removed the husband and father who had been ill for many months due to hardening of the arteries. James M. Pence, who was so well and favorably known in the community in which he lived, was born February 1, 1851, at Leatherwood, Pa., and was, therefore, at the time of his death, 73 years, 4 months and 20 days old. He was a son of George and Anna Delp Pence, of sacred memory. He was educated in the public school at Smithland, this county, and when grown he took as his companion in life Miss Emily J. Reed. To this happy union nine children were born. Three of these died in infancy, and Mrs. Clyde Beham passed to the spirit world about nine years ago. The surviving children are, William E. Pence, Leatherwood; George E. Pence, Pittsburgh; Arthur L. Pence, Climax; Harry B. Pence, at home, and Mrs F. S. Bish, St. Charles. He is also survived by his widow, Mrs. Emily Jane Pence, and by three sisters, namely, Mrs. E. E. Armagost, Reynoldsville; Mrs. Rachel Campbell, Leatherwood; and Mrs. Wm. O. Painter, St. Charles. Mr Pence was member of the Church of God; and the funeral services were held at Squirrel Hill, Tuesday of this week, June 24, and were conducted by Rev. Blair Radaker. The body was laid to rest in the Squirrel Hill cemetery.
