Enlisted on 5/1/1864 at Lewisburg, WV., he was mustered into Company D, 14th Virginia Cavalry.
Present or accounted for on all Rolls until seriously Wounded In Action 8/6/1864 at Moorefield, VA; leg amputated.
On rolls 4/9/1865 at Appomattox Court House, VA; escaped; discharged on 4/11/1865 at Lynchburg, VA., when Company disbanded.

Postwar he was Sheriff of Alleghany County (1866-69), then Clerk of Court 1870-75.

Comrade John R. Pharr, a wounded Confederate veteran,
died in the home of his brother, Dr. D.C. Pharr, near Gap Mills, W. Va., on the 28th of June.
He was born at Covington, Va., in 1838, a son of the late Rev. Dion C. Pharr, of the Presbyterian Church.
He served bravely in the 14th Virginia Cavalry until he received an ankle wound in the Battle of Moorefield, W. Va. It caused the loss of his leg.
His home had always been at Covington, Va.. where he was highly esteemed, and for some time he had been Sheriff of Alleghany County. His health giving way, he had been brought to the home of his brother, Dr. Pharr, who tenderly ministered to him to the end. Confederate Veteran, Vol. XVI, p. 416.
