Later in life he survived a fiery car crash that caused terrible burns to his head and hands. He lost an ear as a result.
He was working underneath Centre Presbyterian Church when he had a heart attack and passed away. Some of the family would later go on to refer to Centre Church as "the church Uncle Shep died under".
