Father Luke was born in Cambridge Massachusetts, he attended the former Putman School.
He was a novitiate and studied philosophy at St. Anthony's Seminary in Catskill, New York, where he changed his baptismal name, Walter, to his religious name, Luke. He went to St. Francis Seminary in Andover, Mass., for his masters from Fordham University. Following his ordination, he began a 40-year teaching career, aiding students at St. Francis Seraphic Seminary in Andover and Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx, N.Y.
In 1961, he founded and was the first headmaster of the Serra High School in McKeesport, PA. He became assistant pastor of St. Leonard's Church in the North End of Boston in 1977, where he delivered daily talks in Italian. He was the founder and editor of PADRE Magazine from 1950 to 1963 and edited the Immaculate Conception Provincial Chronicle from 1967 to 1971.
