Melvin Robert Anderson, 80, passed away Sunday, March 17, while with his family in Denton, TX. Melvin was born in Stigler, OK on January 12, 1922, the first born of Thomas and Polly Anderson. A decorated veteran of the United States Army, Melvin served honorably in Europe during World War II from his participation in the D-day invasion through the duration of the war. The recipient of the Silver and Bronze Star Medals and 2 Purple Hearts. Sergeant Anderson distinguished himself in combat. Honors bestowed by Brigadier General William H. Colbern include: “For gallantry in action” and “Heroic achievement in action . . . Sergeant Anderson’s actions reflect great credit on himself and the United States Armed Forces.” Melvin married Hazel Branscum on August 4, 1941. The Andersons raised 5 children: “Sonny,” “Sissy,” “Gena,” “Rogie” and “Mikey.” A retired Pipefitter and avid outdoorsman, Melvin provided well for his family and they spent many wonderful occasions hunting, camping and fishing. Preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Roger Allen Harmon Jr. Service to be held Thursday, March 21, 11 a.m., First Baptist Church of Catoosa, OK, 300 South Cherokee. Interment Wann Cemetery near Oolagah, OK. Contributions may be made in Melvin’s name to the Purple Heart Chapter of Oklahoma. Melvin will be sorely missed. Service and interment under the direction of Amis-Kennard Funeral Home.
