CAVE IN ROCK - Radford Gregory Barnard, age 93, of Marion, Ill., and formerly of Cave In Rock, Ill., founding partner of Rigsby & Barnard Quarry of Cave In Rock, passed away at 5:25 a.m. on Friday, March, 30, 2007, of kidney failure, at his home in Marion.
Rad was born Nov. 9, 1913, in rural Hardin County, the eldest son of Joel Gentry and Myra Alma (Milligan) Barnard.
He attended Love Grade School and Cave In Rock High School. Because of the need to enter the work force and help support his family, he did not graduate. Due to his inability to obtain a high school diploma he highly stressed education to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was very proud of their accomplishments and eagerly supported all their endeavors.
From 1933 to 1948, he was engaged in a trucking business. In the beginning, he drove livestock to St. Louis, and then loaded his empty truck with hardware and products for the local hardware store in Cave In Rock. Eventually, R & B trucking was established, and it was managed by other partners and family members.
On July 24, 1939, he married Laura Zinn Williams, daughter of Thomas Jefferson and Gretchen (Zinn) Williams, in St. Charles, Mo. They enjoyed more than 67 years of marriage.
He also worked in the fluorspar mines, with his friend, Robin Hastie. He, Robin, and Ted Rigsby then worked together in the limestone quarry business. By 1941, Rad and Ted began Rigsby and Barnard Quarry, while Robin left to begin other successful businesses of his own.
Rad encouraged people to be productive and led by example. If he wasn't at the quarry, he'd be at one of his farms, the water plant, or in the garden. He was a civic leader, bank director, water district superintendent, church deacon, and successful businessman and cattleman. Rad was a member of the Cave In Rock First Christian Church, Lions Club, and Masonic Lodge 444.
Regardless of his many work projects, he made time to enjoy a few hobbies. He loved to quail hunt, care for his bird dogs, shoot clay pigeons, and marvel at the great outdoors. In the early years, Laura Z. and he also bowled on a couples bowling league. He later became an amateur beekeeper and photographer.
Traveling to new destinations was a great fascination for him, too. He loved driving vacations. It was on many of these driving trips that he taught his grandchildren to drive and read an atlas. For those grandkids who had no sense of direction, he would smile and say "They get that from Laura Z., because she can't find her way out of a paste board box." Laura Z. would smile and readily agree.
As he grew older, he took to the skies. He always wanted a window seat on the plane and never wasted a minute sleeping. He was captivated as he would watch the horizon and land changes as he flew from place to place. His pace might have slowed, but it didn't keep him at home.
Rad believed that God was his creator and knew he was a successful businessman because of God's blessings upon his life. Rad, in return, was always a generous and kind man, who was loved and respected by his family and community. He leaves an honorable legacy and will be greatly missed!
