Chico Daily Record, Friday Morning, July 29, 1898, pg 1 col 3: Young David Butler Meets Sudden Death. While Swimming in a Lake on the Pratt Grant his Life is Lost. The Body was Recovered. Was the Youngest Son of Mr. and Mrs. A.B. Butler of Colusa, Who Formerly Lived in Butte.

Wm. Thomas, the well-known farmer, brought the news to town late last night of the drowning yesterday afternoon of David Butler, the ten-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. A.B. Butler, in a small lake on the Pratt Grant. The Butler family live near Colusa, and are relatives by marriage of Mr. Thomas, and for some days past Mrs. Butler and her son have been visiting at the Thomas place.

Tuesday Mrs. Butler went to pay a short visit with the family of Henry Taylor, intending to return yesterday. Near the Taylor home is a small but very deep lake, which in times of high water forms a part of Butte creek. At about 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon the boy, in company with several others of about his age, set out for the lake with the intention of going in swimming. He was the only one of the number who could swim, and had his clothes off and was in the water before the other lads could undress. He swam out a shot distance to a clump of grass, and almost immediately sank and was drowned before the eyes of his terrified companions. They ran hurriedly to where Mr. Thomas and other men were at work in a field a mile away and notified them of the accident. By the time assistance arrived and the body was removed from the water fully an hour had elapsed and the spark of life had fled.

Mr. Thomas came to town and notified Deputy Coroner Burroughs, who in view of the circumstances, waived an inquest. Undertaker Edgar of Thos. Bicknell’s establishment accompanied him back to the ranch last night and prepared the body for burial. Arrangements for the funeral were not completed, but it will take place either in Chico or Colusa.

The supposition is that the boy was taken with cramps owing to his heated condition when he entered the water.

The Butler family is one well-known in Butte and Colusa counties, they having formerly lived near the scene of the accident. The drowned child was the youngest of a family of ten children.
