OBIT: "SPONENBERG, JOHNSTOWN, DIED AT 88"
"David H. Sponenberg 99, of Burton Street, a retired leather worker, died yesterday morning at Nathan Littauer Hospital, where he was admitted Sunday night.
A NATIVE of the Town of Mohawk, Montgomery County, he had been a Johnstown resident since 1888. A leather finisher for many years at the former Johnstown Mocha Mill, he retired about 19 years ago.
Mr. Sponenberg was a member of the First Methodist Church, Cayadutta Lodge of Odd Fellows and Johnstown Exampt Fireman's Association..
Survivors are two sons Walter C Sponenberg and Winfield S Sponenberg of Johnstown, grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Service will be held at 2:30 P.M. tomorrow at the Barter Funeral home. Rev Clair E Carpenter of the First Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Sand Flats."
He was the son of George E. Sponenberg and Abigail H. Wood-Davis.
Abigail H. Wood born 1-5-1837 the daughter of David and Catherine Wood of Glen, Montgomery Co. NY. She first married Richard Davis 1-3-1865 Reformed Dutch Church of Glen, NY. Richard born 1835, died 8-24-1867 Glen, NY. He was the son of Adam Hoffman Davis and Catherine Smith who married 6-23-1823 Reform Protestant Dutch Church of Caughnawaga. Adam died and Catherine remarried Marrin Swartwent/Swartout. Richard and Abigail are living with them in the 1865 NY ST Census listed as step children.
Abigail and Richard had daughter Catherine (Katie) E. Davis born 2-17-1866 at Auriesville, Montgomery Co. NY. She died 12-28-1938 Johnstown, Fulton Co., NY.
Abigail next married George E. Sponenberg 4-14-1869. After his wife Elizabeth Ecker died. George born 4-15-1827 died 7-25-1883. His will written 7-12-1883.
David is the grandson of David and Catherine Wood of Glen, NY. The great grandson of David Wood and Elizabeth Van Der Werken, The Great great grandson ot Uriah Wood and Magdalena Quackenbush.
Abigail and Katie are also buried in this cemetery. I will be back to add a Memorial for Abigail.
