John "Johnny" Ahrens, 77, passed away on February 2, 2018. Burial will be at Garland Memorial Park.

Johnny was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, the only child of the late Otis and Anita Young Ahrens. He graduated South San Antonio High School in 1958. He received a Bachelor of Music from North Texas State University in 1964. After teaching music in Dallas ISD, Johnny worked in the Insurance industry for more than 40 years and he retired in 2011.

For most of Johnny’s life, he was involved with music. He was a member of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America, Inc. and he sang in many Dallas area choruses and quartets. Johnny was a talented musician and loved singing and playing the piano and accordion as a member of the Early Country Western Swing Band and Pack Saddle Pass Band.

Johnny’s hobbies included restoring antique cars. He entered his jams and jellies in the State Fair of Texas and brought home dozens of blue ribbons. He was an amateur beekeeper and honey harvester. Johnny enjoyed generously giving away his jams, jellies, and honey.

As a 34 year member of the First Baptist Church Garland, Johnny served as a Deacon, Sunday School Director, Teacher and Choir member.

Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Barbara Horbal Ahrens; sons: John Scott Ahrens, Robert Paul Shaw and his wife, Elena, and Randal Brian Shaw and his wife, Dana; daughters: Debra Ahrens Zimmer and her husband, Eric, Melodie Shaw Kenney and her husband, Michael, Penny Shaw Crosson and her husband, Troy; grandchildren: Brooke Stavely, Blake Stavely, Lauren Ahrens, Kevin Kenney, Carolyn Kenney King and her husband, Josh, Jonathan Kenney, Tyler Crosson and his wife, Laura, Shannon Shaw, Kendall Crosson Brantley and her husband, Taylor, James Shaw, Erik Shaw, and Austin Shaw; and great-granddaughter, Edith Anne Kenney; other relatives and many friends.
