Joel Peñalver Caldera

~ Obituary ~

Joel came to the world on April 17, 1968 in Calera, Zacatecas, Mexico. He was the fourth of five children born to Catalina Caldera Montoya and Fortunato Peñalver Mercado. As a child Joel was an energetic child who had a talent for hiding in the corn fields of his native Zacatecas because of his small stature.

Joel and his family immigrated to East Los Angeles in 1973, where he later welcomed his younger brother Jorge to the world. While in Los Angeles his brother Nato introduced him to his lifelong love for the sweet science of boxing.

The day Joel's family moved to Portland, they were greeted with falling ash as Mt. St. Helens erupted. It is a story that Joel often shared with his kids.
Joel's family later moved to his Woodlawn neighborhood where him and his sister Esmeralda attended Woodlawn School and Holy Redeemer. Joel was an altar boy and later promoted from Holy Redeemer. Later Joel attended Lincoln High School for one year, and later graduated from Jefferson High School. While in high school Joel was a varsity cross-country runner, track team member, and wrestler. In high school he reconnected with his true passion of boxing and inspired many kids in the community to box at Knott Street Boxing Club.

His oldest brother Eduardo helped raise him and taught him to find his way as a young adult. After completing high school Joel's brother Jaime motivated him to attend Oregon State University. While at OSU Joel was a proud member of the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity. Soon after college Joel returned home to help his mother Catalina open two Mexican restaurants, and he re-established the Knott Street boxing program at Matt Dishman Community Center along side his two close friends Andre Haynes and Ray Monge. Joel was a devoted coach where his fighters won national titles and completed in Olympic trials. During this time he trained his baby brother Jorge, and eventually he began to train his greatest pride and joy, his son Lorenzo.

Joel was later blessed with the birth of his beautiful baby girl, Sophia. Joel was a devoted father who enjoyed cooking, gardening, restoring oldschool Impala's and the nightlife. Joel will always be remembered as a fun loving, happy, and kind-hearted being. His heart was so big that he raised two other children, Adrina and Valentino as his own. Joel always looked after his family with great care and love. Joel adored his mother Catalina and his children.

He leaves to cherish his memory: His son Lorenzo Joel Caldera, his daughters Adrina Catrice Roberson and Sophia Catalina Caldera, and Valentino Joel Caldera. His mother Catalina Caldera, and his brothers Eduardo Peñalver, Fortunato Peñalver, Jaime Caldera, Jorge Meza, and his sister Esmeralda Caldera. His brother-in-law Andre Haynes, and sisters-in-law Linda Vanblairicom, Geraldina Becerra, and Monica Meza. The mother of his children Corina Santos, and Alma Mendoza. His three grandchildren Isaiah Ford, Rio Lovely, and one on the way. Also a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends who loved him dearly.

Arrangements under the direction of Caldwell's, Hennessey, Goetsch & McGee Funeral Home, Portland, OR.
