Hazel D. Alter, 90, Shelbyville, died Thursday, June 2, in the W.S. Major Hospital in Shelbyville, after a short illness.

Mrs. Alter was born May 21, 1893, in Decatur County, the daughter of Manford and Letitia Holland Slifer. She was married to Jakey Alter Feb. 4, 1914, and he preceded her in death Aug. 27, 1954. A housewife, she lived most of her life in the St. Omer area, moving to Shelbyville in the mid 1960's. She was a member of the Waldron Chapter No. 187 of OES and the Moscow Christian Church, and later attended the First Christian Church in Shelbyville.

She is survived by a foster grandson, Michael R. Schantz, Shelbyville, and one foster-great-grandson.

Sh was preceded in death by one son, Carl Alter, who died in infancy in 1916; one brother, Elmer lifer, who died April 25, 1965, and her foster son, Paul Shantz, who died in 1974.

The services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Carmony Funeral Home in Shelbyville, with the Rev. James Horner officiating, and with burial in the Moscow Cemetery. Friends may call this evening from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., and an OES service will be held at 8 p.m.
