John Jay ReQua, 91, of Winfield, Kansas, died Sunday afternoon, February 4, 2018 at William Newton Hospital.

He was born the son of Harry and Gladys (MacGregor) ReQua on September 2, 1926 in Missouri. He was raised by Riley and Alice MacGregor and received his education in Medicine Lodge. John joined the United States Navy in June of 1944 and proudly served his country until his honorable discharge in May of 1946. He worked as a farmer and at Boeing Aircraft as a young man.

John was united in marriage to Gerry Hartley on June 30, 1946 at Forest City Chapel in rural Medicine Lodge, Kansas. The couple made their first home in rural Barber County. Scott City. In 1964, John began working at Camp Lakeside in Scott City as the manager. He came to Winfield in 1974 to attend and graduate from Southwestern College. In 1982, he and Gerry moved to Wichita and he began working as a Social Worker for the College Hill United Methodist Church staff. He retired in 1994. Following retirement, John volunteered with Cookson Hills. He and Gerry were UMYF sponsors for several years.

He was a member of College Hill United Methodist Church until he transferred his membership to Grace United Methodist Church in Winfield. John loved to do yardwork and took great pride in his roses. He was an avid reader and made prize winning banana bread. He loved fair going and was a great 4-H and youth supporter.

His family includes:
His wife: Gerry ReQua of Winfield;
His daughters: Kathy Brazle and husband, Frank of Chanute; Jessie Bradley and husband, Jim of Dexter; Renee Smith and husband, Scott of Hutchinson;
His twin brother: Riley ReQua of Hawkinsville, GA;
His sister: Nancy Greenwood of Aurora, CO;
His grandchildren: Andy Brazle; Ashlee (Matt) Nelson; Tyler (Bri) Siefkes; Cameron (Hannah Dreher) Siefkes; and
His great grandchildren: Sam and Laura Fischbach; Sophie and Lexie Nelson; Jordyn and Kennedy Siefkes.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by a sister, Comora Nash, a brother, Bill MacGregor and a granddaughter, Amber Fischbach.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 8, 2018 at 10:00 A.M. at Grace United Methodist Church. Interment with Military Committal Honors will be at 3:30 P.M. that afternoon at Medicine Lodge Cemetery. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service on Wednesday from 5 to 8 P.M. The family will greet visitors from 5 to 7 that evening.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made in John’s name to Camp Lakeside. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
