Veronica Eva (Gau) Pauley was born March 5, 1925, to Chrysant and Anna (Breidenbach) Gau at her home near Portsmouth, Iowa. She was raised in the Portsmouth area and attended school there.

Veronica married Ralph Pauley, Sr. on February 27, 1946, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa. They were blessed with seven children.

They farmed near Tenant,Iowa, east of Panama, Iowa and near Defiance, Iowa before the family settled near Westphalia, Iowa. They later farmed east of Westphalia before buying a farm east of Woodbine, Iowa in January 1971. In 1996 the couple moved into Woodbine. Ralph died on August 8, 2007. Veronica became a resident of Rose Vista Nursing Home in March of 2014.

Veronica was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Woodbine. She was also a member of the Rosary Society, CD of A. She was active in her church and set up for Mass each weekend. Veronica was also a volunteer at Rose Vista.

Veronica always enjoyed when family stopped for a visit, listening to polka music, playing the accordion and sharing her musical talents. She also enjoyed teaching Shirley and Chad how to play the button accordion. The couple enjoyed dancing and were members of Woodbine and Missouri Valley dance clubs.

Veronica died on Saturday, February 3, 2018, at the Rose Vista Nursing Home in Woodbine, Iowa at the age of 92 years, 10 months, and 29 days.

Veronica was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ralph Pauley, Sr.; daughter, Mary Williams; infant son, Gerard Pauley; grandson, Scott Williams; great-grandson, Daxtyn Nelson; and three siblings, Joe Gau, Mildred Kirschbaum and Gertrude Janssen.

She is survived by five children, Ron (Donna) Pauley and Don (Helga) Pauley all of Shelby, Iowa, Shirley (Tom) Schwertley of Logan, Iowa, Ralph Jr. (Shelli) Pauley and Jeff (Nikki) Pauley all of Woodbine, Iowa; son-in-law Bruce (Vivian) Williams of Woodbine, Iowa; 13 grandchildren, Don Jr., Steffanie, Robert, Mark, Brenda, Rhonda, Chad, Jennifer, Ryan, Gina, Kyle, Melissa and Vincent; 18 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Visitation 4-8 pm Thursday, February 8 at Fouts Funeral Home, 501 Normal Street, Woodbine, with family receiving friends 5-8 pm. A Scripture Service will begin at 7:30 at the mortuary. Mass of Christian Burial 10:30 am Friday, February 9 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 704 Normal Street Woodbine, followed by interment in Woodbine Cemetery. After graveside services, the family invites friends to join them for a luncheon at Sacred Heart Parish Center by the church.
