Ethel J. Vogel, 94, formerly of Pettibone, ND, passed away in Jamestown on January 20, 2017.
Ethel was born August 1, 1922 in rural Michigan, ND to Casper and Orphie (Wise) Narum. Following her mother's death, she was raised from age 3 by George and Minnie McCrae of Michigan.
She graduated from Michigan High School in 1940, and Jamestown College in 1944. There she met Marvin Vogel of Pettibone, ND, and they were married February 11, 1944. Two years after Marvin returned home from WWII, Marvin and Ethel took over the family farm near Pettibone, in Weiser Township. Here they raised 5 children, and enjoyed social activities like square dancing and hosting card parties. During this time Ethel was an active member of Malcolm United Church of Christ, playing organ and piano for church services and youth choir. She was also active in Weiser Homemakers and Ladies Aid.
After Marvin's untimely passing from cancer in 1970, Ethel moved off the farm and started a professional career; first at Farmers Union Insurance in Jamestown, and then after moving to Fargo, the Fargo Clinic, NDSU Speech and Hearing Clinic, and the VA Hospital. She retired in 1981 and returned to Pettibone to her community, church, long time friends, and her farm. She had always been a voracious reader, and lover of music, especially gospel, classical, and show tunes, and those activities continued, along with traveling during the winter months. She enjoyed planting her flower gardens, and the wide array of people that frequently stopped to visit.
In 1994, Ethel moved to Jamestown permanently and lived at the Gardenette Apartments until just before her passing. She kept an active social life, playing cards at the center, attending many music programs, especially Jamestown College, and visiting with family and friends.
Ethel is survived by sons Bruce (Irene), Dickinson, ND, Clifford, Steele, ND, Clyde, Tuttle, OK, and daughter Pat (Dale), Clackamas, OR; 7 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, with a 13th arriving soon. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin, her parents, and son, Russell.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, January 28 at Eddy Funeral Chapel, Jamestown, ND. Honoring Ethel's wishes there will be no private viewing. A private burial will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to one's favorite charity or taking someone you love out for lunch and conversation.
