Mrs. Wrae Ward Smith, 91, a leader of the Wagram community for over 50 years died peacefully Thursday, May 4, at Scotia Village in Laurinburg.

A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Spring Hill Baptist Church in Wagram officiated by the Revs. Van Ingram and John Hoit.

Born August 3, 1908 in Belvedere, NC to Thomas Ward and Hannah Weston, she attended Meredith College and graduated from East Carolina University. Her teaching career spanned 41 years in Elizabeth City, Sanford, Snead's Grove, Poplar Branch and included 25 years at Wagram Elementary School. She retired in 1973.

Her marriage to Daniel W. Smith in 1935 brought her to the Wagram/Riverton community, and when they moved there in 1945, she became active in Spring Hill Baptist Church and the Home Demonstration Club. Mr. And Mrs. Smith lived in the Charles Livingston Smith House on the Dan Smith Road, which was built in 1825. Mrs. Smith began a family tree of the Riverton kin and was a colorful source of local history and lore. In 1961, she founded the annual Fourth of July Riverton Picnic which now attracts upwards of 175 cousins and friends.

Surviving are a son, Daniel White Smith, Jr. of Riverton; a daughter, Mrs. Kent A. (Carolyn Wrae) Morgan of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; and grandsons, Daniel White Smith, III and Matthew Livingston Smith.

Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Saturday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium in Laurinburg.
