James Duncan Smith was born in Henry Co., GA. According to his death certificate his parents were James D. Smith and Bettie Adams. This has not been confirmed except on death certificate.

A CSA Muster Roll -A copy of J. L. Walthall's Co. E 62nd Infantry Regiment shows that James D. Smith enlisted 18 Jan 1864 in Talladega, AL. Also listed is a John M. G. Smith, no known relationship. They were among 55 privates, had no uniforms, no arms, were never paid.

He married Sarah A. Stubbs, 21 July 1865 in Ashland, Talladega Co., Alabama. According to census records they were in Texas when daughter Margaret was born in 1866. Jim was a farmer in Hopkins County, Texas. Census records confirm ten children: Margaret Ann, Mary Etta, Fannie, Robert, Charles, William (Willie), Ophelia, Leila and Leona. There may have been two more.
