James I. Bailey Sr. formerly of Sharon, passed away at 5:12 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, 2007, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after a brief illness. He was 94.
Mr. Bailey was born on Tuesday, Aug. 13, 1912, in Sharon to James L. and Edith Foulk Bailey.
He was a graduate of Sharon High School and attended Westminster College, New Wilmington.
Mr. Bailey worked as an automobile sales associate at the former Sarvas Dodge in Hermitage, retiring in 1978. He served as a teacher at what was Shenango Valley School of Business for 17 years and was a substitute teacher for five years at what was Mercer County Vocational Technical School.
He was also owner of Bailey's Golf Club Repair, based in his home.
He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Sharon.
For 18 years, Mr. Bailey was a member of the Sharon school board, 13 of which he served as president. He also served on the boards of Intermediate Unit IV for four years, two as president; Sharon School Authority, four years, during which time he was the treasurer; and West Side Civic Organization, as president.
He participated in American Red Cross blood drives, United Fund campaigns; and assisted the U.S. Army Ordnance for six years during World War II. Mr. Bailey was a member of the Mercer County Republican Party; was a life member of Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge 103, Sharon, having belonged to the lodge for 59 years; and for 10 years belonged to Sharon Playground Commission.
He was a 50-year member of Free and Accepted Masons, as a former member of Lodge 250, Sharon, with his current membership in Lodge 389, West Middlesex. He belonged to Scottish Rite's New Castle Consistory; and Mercer County Shriners Club; and served as an instructor at golf clinics in Bradenton, Fla.
Mr. Bailey was a sportswriter for the Classified Shopper and was recipient of The Herald's Silver Pen Award for the best editorial on education. He was inducted into the Mercer County Hall of Fame for achievements in football, basketball and track.
His special interests included active involvement in local government affairs, school improvement and the advancement of his community, all of which he believed contributed to his success and happiness in life.
His wife, the former Mary Eleanore Oakley, whom he married May 7, 1938, passed away Aug. 11, 2000.
Surviving are: a daughter, Dr. Melinda Ristvey and her husband Thomas, Hermitage; a son, James I. Bailey Jr., Hermitage; six grandchildren, Lori and her husband Timothy Christian, Wendy Bailey, Jennifer Bailey, Tanya and her husband Charlie Bish, Jill and her husband Scott Hanawalt, and Thomas Ristvey Jr. and his wife Deborah; and six great-grandchildren.
Besides his wife, Mr. Bailey was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Richard T. Bailey; two brothers, Jack and Arthur Bailey; and a sister, Isabel Stewart.
