Anna "Amanda" Darrenkamp, 91, formerly of 15 E. Main St., Mount Joy, died of natural causes Sunday evening at Pleasant View Retirement Community, Manheim, where she lived since 2000.
Mrs. Darrenkamp owned and operated the former H.A. Darrenkamp grocery and penny candy store. She ran the turn-of-the-century candy store at 13 E. Main St., Mount Joy, from 1933 until she retired in 1996.
The store, opened by her late husband in the early 1900s, not only supplied local residents with food staples but also provided the setting for daily conversations around a cast iron, potbellied stove. The store also had a small lunch counter where she served drinks and sandwiches. During the 1960s, her daughter assisted with the daily operation of the store.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Mount Joy, for more than 70 years.
Mrs. Darrenkamp also belonged to James Buchanan Chapter 315, Order of the Eastern Star.
She was a life member of Fire Department Mount Joy.
Born in Ickesburg, she was the daughter of the late John L. and Julie Ann Swinehart Fuller.
She was the wife of the late Harry A. Darrenkamp.
Surviving is a daughter, Jean E., married to Daniel Jury of Mount Joy.
