Mary Frances Hodkin Ayres, age 75, passed away early on the morning of March 28, 2007, at her home in rural Carthage, Mo.

Mary was born May 19, 1931, in Carthage to Lee and Zedia Hodkin. Mary was a lifelong resident of Carthage and was known and loved by many in the community. She enjoyed life to the fullest, whether in the company of a good friend or her grandkids, all of whom she took perfect delight in spoiling. She took special pleasure in spending time with her grandchildren, playing cards with "the girls," working jigsaw and crossword puzzles, watching the birds outside her kitchen window or just curling up with a good book.

The majority of her life she devoted to being a homemaker, but last worked for Dr. Grover Patterson until 1988. For many years she was a volunteer election worker during Jasper County elections and had great fun on the class of 1949 class reunion committee.

Mary Hodkin and Vernon Ayers were united in marriage on July 27, 1951, at the 1st Baptist Church, of Carthage. He survives.

Other survivors include one son, Paul Ayres and his wife, Stephanie, of rural Carthage; one daughter, Amy Priester and her husband, Mark, of rural Carthage; four grandchildren, Devon Priester, Cameron Priester and Andrew Ayres, of Carthage, and Lance Cpl. Randy Ayres, United States Marine Corps, MCAS New River, Jacksonville, N.C.; one sister, JoAnn Ellett, of Carthage; several nieces and nephews; and many beloved friends and neighbors. She was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Betty Fasken and Wanda Collins, of Carthage.

The family wishes to thank the many great people who were a part of Mary's life and ask that in lieu of flowers, friends consider making a donation to the Cancer Research Center in Columbia, Mo., or charity of their choice in care of Ulmer Funeral Home, Carthage.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 31, at Park Cemetery, Carthage, with Rev. Kent Hogan officiating. Visitation for the public will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 30, at Ulmer Funeral Home.

Arrangements are under direction of Ulmer Funeral Home.
