The 270 ft. long SS Golden Gate (a sidewheel steamer) was Built in 1851, and caught fire on July 27, 1862 off of Manzanillo, Mexico on a run from San Francisco to Panama where passengers would then cross Panama via the Panama Canal Railway (opened in 1855) and catch another ship to their ultimate destination.

The survivor list includes a "G.F. Bierthaught" as a passenger in the Second Cabin (http://www.ssgoldengate.com/survive.html) which is likely our Person.
His presence in California is confirmed by the 1860 Census where his residence was reported as "St Louis, Sierra, California" and his occupation as a "Miner"
