PEKIN ~ Richard William Ash, 95, of Pekin, passed away at 7:28 a.m. Sunday, January 21, 2018 at Pekin Manor.

Born May 16, 1922 in Bloomington to William John and Blanche Leona (Woods) Ash, he married Emogene Moore on January 22, 1949 in Pekin. She survives.

Also surviving are one son, James (Jody) Ash of Pekin; two daughters, Carolyn Lockard of Monroe, NC and Susie (Darren) Oedewaldt of Pekin; seven grandchildren, Nathan (Kellie) Ash, Sara (Jeff) Ray, Chris Elder, Adam Lockard, Ericka (Aaron) Fannon, Jennie (Jeremiah) Reed, and Taylor (Maggie) Oedewaldt; and seventeen great-grandchildren, Ericka, Anicka, Kailee, Brenden, Trent, Austin, Greyson, Gabriel, Izabel, Caleb, Cadence, Carsen, James, Mitch, Jack, Summer, and Phoebe.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Lavina Hancock and Velma Gehrt.

Dick was a 1941 graduate of Bloomington High School.

A United States Army veteran of World War II, he served from October 31, 1942 to November 28, 1945 in the European Theater. He participated in the Honor Flight in 2015.

Dick worked at Pekin Community High School as a custodian for 25 years, retiring in 1984. Previously, he owned and operated Adams & Ash Shell Station at South 9th and Derby Streets in Pekin for many years.

He was a member of Pekin Church of Christ, where he was a former deacon. He was a retired member of ASCME and was past president of the former union at PCHS. He was a former Boy Scout leader.

Dick enjoyed oil painting, crossword puzzles, but his greatest joy was being with his family. He was a Chicago Bears fan.

His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday, January 26, 2018 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin. Evangelist Paul Thomas will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin, where military rites will be accorded.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Greater Peoria Honor Flight, Post Office Box 5072, Peoria, IL 61601-5072.
