Alan Christopher Mele, 49, formerly of Fawn, died unexpectedly at his home in New Kensington at 12:37 p.m., Saturday, June 4, 2005. Born Feb. 24, 1956 in Natrona Heights, he was raised in Fawn Twp., moving later to New Kensington. A U.S. Marine Corps veteran, he achieved the rank of private first class and served with the 3rd Marine Division, receiving the National Defense Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He also served in Coastal Carolina at Camp LeJeune as a defensive motor vehicle operator for the Special Forces for the 2nd Marine Division in covert operations for the government. Mr. Mele enjoyed fishing, camping and the outdoors in general. He most of all enjoyed the fellowship of his family and friends, and mostly enjoyed everything about everyday life. Survivors include his mother, Mary Kaminski VanTassell of Indiana Twp.; six sons, Daniel (Jennifer) Mele and Shawn (Jessica) Mele, both of Tarentum, Michael Mele of Lower Burrell, Alan Karadema, Wayne Karadema and Chris Karadema, all of Natrona; a stepson, Bruce Karadema of Natrona; a daughter, Starr (Karadema) Dzugan of Natrona; two sisters, Judy (Joe) Mandella of Tarentum and Lottie (Charles) Dobrzynski of New Kensington; four brothers, Wayne (Zolia) Mele of Martinez, Ga., Martin Mele of Natrona Heights, George (Lisa) Mele of Cushing, Maine, and Clyde (Sally) Vorpe of New Kensington; five grandchildren, Zachary Mele, Amber Mele, Deven Mele, Austin Mele and Jacob Mele; and friend Laura Karadema of Natrona. He was preceded in death by his father, Harry A. Mele Sr.; and a brother, Harry A. Mele Jr. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday, June 9, 2005, and from 8 a.m. Friday, June 10, 2005, until time of service at 10 a.m. in the JOSEPH J. CARDARO FUNERAL HOME, 1125 Kenneth Ave., New Kensington. Officiating will be the Rev. Thomas Bossio. Burial, with full military honors, including a 21 gun salute, American flag presentation and taps, will be in Greenwood Memorial Park, Lower Burrell.
