He was born on February 21, 1933 in Staunton, Virginia to the late Elsie Moore and John Edward Rutherford. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife, Patricia Logan Rutherford.
He is survived by his sons, Robert L. and John M. (Desinee) Rutherford; his granddaughter, Amanda Marie Rutherford; and his nieces, Margaret Clare, Jennifer Haydon; and Mary Pat Burke.
Dr. Rutherford was a highly respected educator at all levels of primary, secondary, and collegiate instruction. He served as Professor of Early Childhood Education at Radford University for thirty-seven years and as Dean of Education for two. Upon his retirement, he served as a volunteer for the Radford - Fairlawn Daily Bread for over twenty years. He was an avid film archivist and author of several Western movie books for which he was the recipient of several awards. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and uncle. He will be tremendously missed and always loved. May he rest in peace.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, January 22, 2018 at Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin with the Reverend Mark Kilbourne officiating.
