He attended University of Virginia and was a member of Delta Epsilon at UVA. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran serving in World War II. He was a charter member of the Smithfield Kiwanis Club. He served on the Board of Directors of Ivy Hill Cemetery and Paul D. Camp Community College in Franklin. He also was a member of German Club and American Legion, George F. Dashiell, Post #49. Mr. Haverty was a past member of the Smithfield Ruritan Club, Commonwealth Chorus and Memories of Yesterday Quartet. He volunteered as a driver for local cancer patients to various hospitals.
Survivors include wife, Mary Lou Barlow Haverty; two daughters, Mary Kim Haverty and Sue Haverty Ross and her husband, Bob, all from Bloomington, Ill.; son, Howard O. Haverty Jr. and his wife, Diane, of Midlothian, Va.; three grandchildren, Joseph Patrick Haverty, Daniel Jeffrey Haverty and Lauren Olivia Haverty.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 15, in Smithfield Baptist Church with Dr. Donald R. Rhoton officiating. Burial will follow in St. Luke's Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 14, in Colonial Funeral Home, Smithfield.
