Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 28, 2010, at a 10:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Lafayette for Johnnie Sonnier who passed away peacefully at her residence in Lafayette.
Entombment will be in Fountain Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
Reverend F. Hampton Davis, III, Pastor of Our Lady Queen of Peace in Lafayette, will be the Celebrant of the Funeral Mass and will conduct the funeral services.
Johnnie was born outside of Crowley, LA, where she lived on her parents' farm. She moved to Crowley to live with her sisters and attend school. She excelled in Algebra and Spelling and regularly won at rally. Johnnie was the forward on the Crowley High Basketball Team and was an excellent golfer. After completing high school, Johnnie attended SLI (now UL Lafayette). She became a legal secretary and worked for Bailey and Mouton law firm for over 25 years. There she became a Notary Public.
During WWII, she met and eloped with the love of her life, Vincent. They lived in New Orleans where he taught flight at the New Orleans Navy Air Field. Later, they settled in Lafayette, raising their two children, Farley and Anne. She had three grandchildren, Stephanie, Christy and Aimee; and six great-grandchildren.
She studied oil painting with Bobbie Houston, George Rodrigue and Mildred McKnight, and china painting with Barbara DeMoore. Johnnie regularly supported and attended the Lafayette Community Concerts and was a member of the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist Parish. She was a tremendous witness to the Catholic faith by teaching catechism, praying the Rosary daily and never missing Mass, even during illness.
Johnnie particularly enjoyed spending time with her friends, Lessie Wynne, Sweet Pea Rogers, Lee Ritchey, Mary Ann Conor and all the ladies of the Bloody Mary Club. She volunteered as a Pink Lady at Lafayette General Hospital and ran the gift shop. During her husband's illness, she taught herself the art of crewel embroidery. She sewed beautifully and loved to make costumes for her children and grandchildren.
Johnnie put her needs second to those of her family and knew every test, every event and every friend and was vigilant about cooking three hot meals a day and making a good home. She will be remembered most for her fortitude, her selflessness and her ability to be true to herself.
The family wishes to express sincere thanks to Linda Young, Marie Francis and Barbara Garrick for the unfailing care and dedication to Johnnie.
Pallbearers will be Harold Abdalla, Sandy Duhon, David Eason, Billy Mouton, Ben Pooler and Ryan Romero.
The family requests that visitation be observed in Martin & Castille's DOWNTOWN Lafayette location on Tuesday, July 27, 2010 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM and on Wednesday from 8:00 AM until time of service.
A Rosary will be prayed on Tuesday at 7:00 PM in Martin & Castille Funeral Home.
