He spent two years in the United States Navy and married his first wife, Patricia Ann Reed. Together, they had three daughters and one son. Wayne and Patricia's marriage ended in divorce in 1966. On July 20, 1968, Wayne married Marion Jesstine Battles in Bloomington, MN. Together, they had one daughter.
Wayne moved to Laporte from Orlando, FL, in 2008.
He is survived by daughters, Deborah (Brad) Douglas, Teresa Steiner, Rebecca (Pat) Whelan and Jeanne (Shawn) Campbell; stepsons, John (Debbie) Easley and Jessie (Chris) Easley; 9 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marion Steiner; infant son, Wayne Steiner Jr.; and sisters, Lois (Bob) Clerique, Ellen (Howard) Riggs and Carole (Leon) Alden.
