When he was 17, Jim and his friend, Jim Sawyer, enlisted into the United States Army and he earned his high school diploma while in the service.
After an honorable discharge, he returned to the area to work for John Deere retiring in 1996. Jim owned and operated the Third Base Bar in Traer for many years where members from the community would gather for good meals served in a clean place.
He had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh almost as much as he loved to make others laugh. Jim also loved the outdoors and fished and hunted for game, mushrooms and wild asparagus. He also enjoyed NASCAR, stock and drag car racing and the Green Bay Packers. Jim was a member of the Kubik-Finch American Legion Post 142. In more recent years, he was bitten by the gambling bug and could often be found on the slots at Meskwaki getting his photo snapped for a big win. And when his health forced him to slow down, he found scratchers could satisfy the gambling itch.
Jim passed away on Monday, January 15, 2018, at Unity Point Health-Allen Memorial Hospital at the age of 71 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Kathryn; his sister, Debbie Schaefer; and a sister-in-law, Jeanne Schaefer.
Jim is survived by his daughter, Lisa (Frank) Papenberg of St. Joseph, MO; his son, Jimmy Schaefer of Missouri; 3 brothers: Bernard Schaefer of Raymond, John (Cheryl) Schaefer of Washburn, and Michael (Janet) Schaefer of Raymond; 3 sisters: Donna (Dennis) Kohls of Evansdale, Theresa (Mike) Pett of Elk Run Heights, and Mary Johannsen of Hawkeye; and 3 grandchildren.
Memorials may be directed to the family.
