Obituary:
"R. U. Fassnacht, Civic Leader, 71, Dies in Reading Hospital.
Roy U. Fasshacht -- known far and wide affectionately as simply "R. U." -- died at 2:50 a.m. yesterday in the Reading Hospital and Medical Center after an illness of some three months.
President of the Northern Mutual Insurance Company, he was deeply involved at one time or another in numerous civic activities in Ephrata and Lancaster County.
He was a long-time director of the Ephrata Community Hospital, active in the Pioneer, Lincoln and Schoeneck fire companies, organizer of the Ephrata Elks Lodge, 1933 to 1954, a re-organizer of the Farmers Day Association which sponsors the Ephrata Fair and long-time treasurer of that organization, and a leading light in many community fund-raising efforts.
R. U., who lived at 171 Ridgeway Ave., was born in Schoeneck in 1910, a son of the late William and Mary Usner Fassnacht. Following graduation from Denver High School, he attended Albright College, later transferring to Beckley college, Harrisburg, where he received a degree in education.
He taught for a semester at Camp Hill High School, then became associated with the Ephrata Shoe Company for nine years before founding his own insurance agency in the Royer Building. In 1941, he moved the business to 11 W. Mains St., where it remained until Jan. 1, 1971, when he moved to its present location at 115 E. Main St.
At the age of 16 he joined the Schoeneck Fire Company and remained active the rest of is life. He was secretary of that company for 15 years, was a member of the Lincoln Fire Company and held the first and only life membership in the Pioneer Fire Company, presented in recognition of his fund-raising efforts in 1970 which led to the building of the fire hall.
He also was a trustee of the Ephrata Fireman's Relief Association.
From 1941 to 1973, R. U. was a member of the board of directors of the Ephrata Community Hospital. He was board secretary for a number of years and also chairman of the building committee.
He also spearheaded a drive to raise funds for an advanced life support unit for the Ephrata Ambulance Association.
In 1945 he helped re-organize the Farmers Day Association when its founders were about to let it drop. He was on the board of directors since that time.
R. U. helped to organize the Ephrata Elks Lodge in 1954 and served as exalted ruler in 1954-55. For many years he headed its project of Christmas baskets for needy families as well as the lodges' charity and welfare committee.
His love of dogs led him to conduct a sort of one-man home-finding agency for stray dogs in the community.
In August of 1969 he helped to organize the Ephrata Area Rehabilitation Services (EARS) of which he was vice president for more than seven years.
R. U. was vice president of the Northern Mutual Insurance Company from 1967 to 1973 and since 1974 served as its president.
In 1977, the Ephrata Area Jaycees presented him with their Distinguished Service Award in appreciation of the numerous contributions and time he gave in helping people both in the Ephrata area and surrounding community. The award stated, "He would rather give of his time and of himself to others before he stops to think of himself."
He is survived by his wife, the former Mary Jane Binkley, and one daughter, Carla Sue, wife of John Weidman, an Akron native, who resides in Minneapolis, Minn.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Gravenor Home for Funerals, 100 W. Main St. with the Rev. Charles E. Strasbaugh officiating. Interment will follow in Mellinger's Cemetery, Schoeneck.
Friends may call at the funeral home tomorrow, from 7 to 9 p.m. and prior to the services Saturday. Ephrata Lodge 1933, BPOE will conduct a memorial service at Gravenor's at 9 p.m. tomorrow."
