Benjamin L. Hawkins was born 1800 in Kentucky. He married Mahala T. Powers, who was born in Virginia. They lingered in the Dubois County area of Indiana because all their children seemed to be born in Indiana. Then the time came when the family migrated West into Morris County, Missouri (known today as Carroll County).

At this time in history, I have not seen a marker for Benjamin L. Hawkins. However, among the probate documents is the receipt for a $30 headstone. There continue to be descendants of Benjamin and Mahala Hawkins in this area of Carroll County, MO.

Benjamin and Mahala are the parents of the following known children:

Richard J. Hawkins was born 1840 in Indiana. In 1871 he married Sarah Jane Helpenstein, who was also born in Indiana in 1844. They are parents of 3 known children: John, born in Indiana in 1862, Elsie, born in Missouri in 1879, and a daughter Mary M. who died young.
