She graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond, attended Converse College, and later studied at University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill once planning to be a French teacher. She worked as a flight attendant for American Airlines, taught dance to children and youth, and mastered the art of needlework early in life. She was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Concord, the Ruth Coltrane Cannon Garden Club, the Ethel R. Williams Book Club, the Santee Country Club and the Cabarrus Country Club. Barbara celebrated a good round of golf both as a player and as a fan. She was an enthusiastic traveler with family and friends, and once made the trip to Saint Andrews Old Course in Scotland to play golf. She was at ease on the ballroom dance floor, enjoyed sailing her Sunfish on Lake Norman, and graciously welcomed many golfers and friends to her home in Concord and Santee
