She was born September 15, 1920 to Charles Howard Wright and Beatrice Elizabeth Mekeel Wright in Noxen, PA. Ethel grew up near Harvey's Lake, PA and graduated as a registered nurse from Wilkes-Barre General Hospital (PA). In 1942, Ethel was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps (now the U.S. Air Force). During World War II Ethel served as a flight evacuation nurse ferrying severely wounded soldiers to military hospitals throughout the country.
In November 1945 she married USAF Captain G. Ansel Gorman at Maxwell Field (now Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base) in Montgomery, AL. They moved to the Syracuse-area in 1947. She and Ansel were married for 60 years. Ethel served as a geriatric nurse at VanDuyn on Onondaga Hill until she and Ansel retired to Florida in the 1980's. Ethel was a member of Robinson Memorial Presbyterian Church in Westvale and the Onondaga Yacht Club for many years. She was active in community work, serving as a Sunday school teacher, church elder, 4-H leader and enthusiastic 'band mom' supporting the West Genesee Wildcat Marching Band among other things.
She is survived by her two daughters, Patricia Gorman Canute of Herndon, VA and Virginia Gorman Turley of Falls Church, VA; 2 grandchildren, Erin Gorman Turley Hermann of Charlottesville, VA and Connor James Turley of Falls Church, VA; and, many cousins, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held in the spring followed by inurnment with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.
